Audible Launches ‘Read & Listen’ to Sync Kindle E-books
Audible is bridging the gap between text and audio with the launch of its new “Read & Listen” feature. The tool allows users to seamlessly switch between Kindle e-books and their audiobook counterparts, offering a synchronized experience where the text is highlighted in real-time as the narration plays.
This integration, announced by the Amazon-owned company on Wednesday, brings a capability previously found in the Kindle app directly into the Audible ecosystem. To utilize the feature, customers must own both the e-book and the audiobook version of a title. For those who already possess the e-book, Audible plans to offer discounted pricing on matching audio companions to encourage adoption.
Enhanced Engagement and Accessibility
The company is positioning this launch as a significant boost for reader engagement. According to internal data and industry research cited by Audible, users who combine reading and listening consume nearly twice as much content monthly compared to those who only listen to audiobooks.
The “Read & Listen” mode offers specific benefits for different types of readers:
- Language Learners: Helps with pronunciation and comprehension by pairing visual text with audio.
- Students: Facilitates deeper focus and better retention of material.
- Fantasy Readers: Simplifies the task of learning character names and pronunciations through professional narration.

Rollout and Availability
At launch, the feature supports hundreds of thousands of titles across multiple languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, and Italian. While the update is currently available in the U.S., Amazon has confirmed that support for users in the U.K., Australia, and Germany will follow in the coming months.
The Audible app will automatically detect which Kindle e-books in a user’s library have corresponding audio versions available. This move serves as a more sophisticated alternative to using Alexa for text-to-speech, which often lacks the nuance of professional voice actors.
“Audiobooks count as reading,” said Andy Tsao, chief product officer at Audible. “But now at Audible, you can read with your eyes too. Read & Listen gives book lovers the best of both worlds. Whether you’re learning a new language, studying for school, or lost in a story’s world, you no longer have to choose one format over the other.”
Amazon also clarified that the implementation of this feature will have no impact on the royalty payments provided to publishers. The official announcement emphasizes that this initiative is part of a broader push to increase book sales across all formats by providing a more cohesive digital library experience.
