Google Pixel 10a arrives at $499 with AI camera upgrades

Google has officially expanded its smartphone lineup with the Pixel 10a, a new entry-level device priced at $499. The handset is now available for preorder, with initial shipments scheduled to begin on March 5.

The device introduces several refinements to the A-series, most notably a redesigned chassis. The back of the phone is now entirely flat, allowing the camera bar to sit flush against surfaces—a departure from the protruding designs seen in previous iterations.

Hardware and Display Enhancements

Under the hood, the Pixel 10a retains the Tensor G4 chip. However, the display has received a notable upgrade: the 6.3-inch Actua panel is 11% brighter than the screen found on the Pixel 9a. Battery performance has also been optimized, with faster charging capabilities and a battery life exceeding 30 hours, which can be extended up to 120 hours using the Extreme Battery Saver mode.

Photography remains a priority for the series. The device features a 48 MP main camera alongside a 13 MP ultrawide sensor. Google is positioning this as the premier camera experience for a sub-$500 smartphone.

AI Features and Connectivity

Google is integrating advanced AI capabilities previously exclusive to the flagship Pixel 10 series into the A-series for the first time. Key additions include:

• Auto Best Take: Automatically selects the optimal frames from a burst to ensure everyone in a group photo appears at their best.
• Camera Coach: Offers real-time, step-by-step guidance to improve lighting and composition.
• Satellite SOS: Debuting on the A-series, this feature enables emergency communication in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.

The device will be available in four colorways: Lavender, Berry, Fog, and Obsidian. Additionally, Google announced that the Pixel Buds 2a will now be offered in Berry and Fog to match the new phone.

Software Longevity and Market Context

Google continues its commitment to software support by promising seven years of security and OS updates for the Pixel 10a. Notably, the device lacks the “PixelSnap” magnetic Qi charging feature found on the premium Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold models.

The launch arrives just as the market anticipates Apple’s iPhone 17e, which is expected to carry a $599 price tag.
