Mastodon Targets Creators With Major Platform Overhaul

The decentralized social network Mastodon is launching a series of product updates aimed at simplifying the user experience and attracting high-profile creators. The organization, which operates on the ActivityPub protocol, intends to make its platform more accessible while refining how content creators interact with their audiences.
Improving Onboarding and Retention
Growth for the platform, which currently estimates between 750,000 and 1 million monthly active users, has often been hampered by the complexity of its setup. Unlike centralized apps, Mastodon requires users to select a specific server to join, a hurdle that often confuses new arrivals.
To address this, the development team—bolstered by new hires in design and engineering over the past 18 months—plans to streamline the onboarding process. According to a blog post by technical director Renaud Chaput and product designer Imani Joy, the goal is to better distribute users across smaller, independent servers rather than funneling everyone toward the largest existing instances.
New Tools for Creators and Admins
Mastodon is actively courting public figures, journalists, and institutions with a suite of features designed to improve content visibility and engagement:
- Redesigned Profiles: A new layout will allow individuals to showcase their work more effectively.
- Enhanced Composition: Updates to the posting experience to facilitate better content creation.
- Email Notifications: A feature allowing non-users to follow creator updates via email, bridging the gap between the platform and broader audiences.
Server administrators are also receiving support. New tools will include external blocklist integration, automated content scanning for spam and illegal material, and methods to reduce storage costs by offloading remote media to trusted third parties.
Leadership Transition
These strategic shifts arrive alongside a major change in the organization’s structure. Following the platform’s transition to a nonprofit model, founder Eugen Rochko stepped down as CEO. The leadership is now split between executive director Felix Hlatky and Dr. Marius Rothermund, a German legal expert. The team is currently navigating a restructuring process spanning the United States, Germany, and Belgium.
These initiatives build upon recent additions like “Collections”—a recommendation system similar to Starter Packs—and the introduction of Quote Posts, which provide users with more granular control over how their content is shared.
