US Consumers Distrust Brands Overusing AI in Messaging

Sixty percent of US consumers say ‘AI’ in brand messaging is a turnoff, survey finds

As companies scramble to optimize their content for AI-driven search engines, a disconnect is widening between corporate strategy and consumer sentiment. New data from a report by WordPress VIP reveals that the aggressive integration of artificial intelligence into brand messaging is actively alienating a large portion of the American public.

The research, which surveyed 2,000 participants—including 1,200 US adults and 800 enterprise decision-makers—indicates that reliance on AI tools is becoming a double-edged sword for businesses. While brands prioritize search visibility, they risk eroding the very trust required to maintain a loyal audience.

The Trust Deficit

The findings highlight a deep-seated skepticism toward machine-generated content and brand transparency:

  • 60% of US consumers view the explicit use of “AI” in brand messaging as a negative factor.
  • 86% of respondents express a lack of full trust in AI, maintaining a preference for verifying information through original sources.
  • 42% of consumers stated they trust unverified AI-generated answers less than medical bills, complex privacy policies, or airline fees.

Additionally, nearly 75% of those surveyed expressed a sense of alienation, noting that the internet feels significantly “less human” today than it did a decade ago.

Balancing AI Visibility and Human Connection

For enterprise leaders, the challenge is twofold: ensuring their content remains discoverable by AI agents while keeping it authentic enough to satisfy human readers. Brian Alvey, CTO of WordPress VIP, emphasized the shift in how websites are now being constructed.

“People used to build websites for other people,” Alvey said. “Now you have to build websites for AI agents acting on behalf of those people. If your site’s content isn’t legible to AI, you are invisible to a growing share of how people search. You don’t exist.”

Alvey further noted the consequences of failing to bridge this gap: “If your content doesn’t feel human and trustworthy for the tiny percentage of people who actually click past the AI answer engines, they won’t come back a second time.”

The Enterprise Perspective

Despite consumer pushback, the corporate drive toward AI integration continues to accelerate. The report highlights that 60% of enterprise respondents have observed an uptick in traffic originating from AI search and answer platforms over the past year. Consequently, 74% of decision-makers now categorize AI discoverability and proper attribution as a significant business priority.

The study suggests that future success hinges on transparency. One-third of consumers identified clicking through to an original source as their primary indicator of credibility. Furthermore, 80% of respondents advocated for an open web, favoring information that remains freely accessible rather than siloed within a few dominant organizations—a stance that aligns with the broader open-source initiatives supported by Automattic.
