Epic Games Store Launches on iOS in EU and Android Globally

‘Fortnite’ maker Epic Games launches its app store on iOS in the EU, worldwide on Android

Epic Games has officially initiated its challenge to mobile platform gatekeepers, launching the Epic Games Store for iOS users within the European Union and for Android devices across the globe. This rollout marks a significant shift in mobile distribution, effectively bringing titles such as Fortnite, Rocket League Sideswipe, and Fall Guys back to the iOS ecosystem.

A New Era for Mobile Distribution

The arrival of the Epic Games Store is a direct consequence of the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which mandates that Apple allow third-party app stores on its platform. While the iOS launch is currently restricted to the EU, Android users worldwide can now access the store directly.

To support this expansion, Epic Games is collaborating with several third-party platforms:

  • AltStore PAL: Epic is bringing its titles to this independent mobile store, which recently became free to users via an Epic Games grant.
  • Aptoide: Future plans include bringing Epic’s catalog to Aptoide’s iOS store in the EU.
  • ONE Store: The company intends to integrate its games into this Android marketplace moving forward.

The End of a Four-Year Standoff

The return of Fortnite to Apple devices concludes a contentious four-year absence following the game’s removal from the App Store in 2020. This move represents the first time Apple has faced a high-profile competitor actively attempting to dismantle its long-standing control over iOS app distribution.

“The tide is turning and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney. He expressed gratitude toward the European Commission for enabling the store’s debut, adding, “The fight is far from over, but this is tangible progress for developers and consumers who can begin to benefit from competition and choice.”

Barriers to Entry

Despite the launch, Epic Games contends that the installation process remains unnecessarily difficult. The company has released instructional videos for iOS and Android to assist users navigating these hurdles.

Epic alleges that Apple and Google have implemented “intentionally poor-quality install experiences” characterized by confusing device settings, multiple mandatory steps, and security warnings designed to discourage users from opting for alternative marketplaces. The company is actively working with other developers to onboard additional games to the store in the coming months, signaling a long-term strategy to decentralize mobile gaming.
