Epic Games Store Launches on Mobile in Major Market Shift
The Epic Games Store has officially expanded beyond PC and Mac, arriving on Android devices worldwide and launching for iOS users within the European Union. This rollout represents a significant maneuver in Epic’s ongoing efforts to decentralize app distribution and challenge the traditional dominance of major platform holders.
For mobile users, the development signals a potential shift toward a landscape where multiple app marketplaces can coexist on a single device. While Epic’s previous antitrust legal battle against Apple saw a defeat last year, the company is finding new avenues to bypass long-standing restrictions, particularly through regional legislation.
The availability on Apple’s iOS platform is specifically tied to the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), a regulation forcing tech giants to open their ecosystems to third-party stores. Consequently, the iOS version of the Epic Games Store is currently restricted to users located within the EU.
“The tide is turning and the mobile ecosystem is finally opening up to competition,” said Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney in a public statement. Despite this milestone, Sweeney acknowledged that the company’s broader objectives remain a work in progress, adding that “the fight is far from over.”
Initial Game Library and Future Roadmap
At launch, the store features a selection of Epic’s own high-profile titles. Users can currently access:
- Fortnite
- Rocket League Sideswipe
- Fall Guys
Epic Games has confirmed that its immediate roadmap involves expanding this catalog. The company intends to begin onboarding titles from third-party developers starting in December, aiming to build a more robust marketplace that mirrors the variety found on its desktop storefront.
