X Launches Grok-Powered Custom Timelines for Premium Users

X is rolling out a significant update to its interface with the launch of Grok-powered Custom Timelines. This feature allows users to pin specific interest-based feeds directly to their home tab, marking a shift in how the platform organizes content for its audience.

The update, which X describes as one of the platform’s most substantial product changes to date, utilizes the AI capabilities of Grok to curate and personalize timelines for individual users. Unlike traditional feed filtering, the system does not rely on basic hashtags or keywords. Instead, the AI analyzes the content of posts to assign topic labels, leveraging technology from xAI, the company that acquired X last year.

Currently, this functionality is available exclusively to Premium subscribers on iOS, with an Android release expected to follow. Users can access the feature by navigating past their “For You” and “Following” tabs and tapping the plus (+) icon to select from more than 75 available categories. Users are limited to pinning a maximum of 10 of these custom feeds at once.

Integration and Ad Strategy

The introduction of Custom Timelines coincides with the phasing out of X Communities, a feature that allowed users to form member-based groups but had seen diminishing engagement. The new timelines are designed to offer a more automated, AI-driven alternative for users looking to follow specific niches.

Observers have noted that the second position within these new custom feeds often displays advertisements. This implementation suggests a strategy to expand the platform’s ad inventory, a move that comes as the company continues to navigate challenges in its advertising revenue since its acquisition by Elon Musk.

Available Topics and Content Curation

The 75+ categories cover a wide range of interests, including:

• Pop Culture: Music, Movies & TV, Fashion, K-pop, and Gaming.

While some early news-focused categories prioritize headlines regarding current conflicts and elections, the AI-driven feeds appear to draw from a diverse array of established media outlets, including Reuters, The Associated Press, The Economist, and Bloomberg, alongside various independent pundits.

Alongside the Custom Timelines, X is also introducing a “Snooze Topics” feature for the “For You” feed. This tool provides Premium subscribers with more granular control over the content they encounter, allowing them to effectively filter out topics they wish to see less frequently.
