Threads Launches Live Chats to Rival X in Real-Time Events

Meta is officially introducing “Live Chats” on Threads, a feature designed to foster real-time interaction during major cultural and sporting events. The move marks a significant step for the platform as it attempts to solidify its standing as a destination for breaking news and live commentary, territory historically dominated by X.

The rollout begins with the NBA Playoffs, where selected media personalities—including Rachel Nichols, Malika Andrews, and Da Kid Gowie—will host dedicated chats during games. According to Meta, the feature announced on Wednesday is intended to make the user experience more immediate and responsive to unfolding events.

How Live Chats Work

The functionality allows for a structured, yet dynamic conversation space. While the feature is currently being tested with a select group of creators, the company intends to broaden access over time. Key mechanics of the new tool include:

• Participant Limits: Each active chat allows up to 150 users to send messages simultaneously.
• Spectator Mode: Once the 150-person limit is met, additional users can still join to view the conversation, participate in polls, and react to content.
• Rich Media Support: Users can share links, photos, videos, and emoji reactions within the stream.
• Discovery: Threads users can access these sessions via Community feeds, shared posts, or by tapping the red “live” indicator on a host’s profile image.

Moderation and Future Updates

Meta has built-in safeguards to manage the flow of conversation. Hosts are equipped with real-time moderation tools, allowing them to remove participants or transition them to “spectator” status. Furthermore, automated systems are in place to detect and remove content that violates platform policies, alongside standard user reporting options.

Although these chats conclude after the event ends, they remain available as public, discoverable archives. Looking ahead, the platform has outlined an aggressive roadmap for the feature. Upcoming enhancements will include:

• Support for co-hosting capabilities.
• Integration of real-time play-by-play updates.
• Lock-screen widgets to track active live sessions.
• The ability to quote and share specific chat messages directly into main Threads feeds.
