Nintendo Confirms Switch Successor Reveal Coming This Year

Nintendo has officially broken its silence regarding the future of its gaming hardware. Shuntaro Furukawa, president of the company, confirmed via social media that an announcement concerning the successor to the Nintendo Switch is scheduled for the current fiscal year.

Nintendo finally confirms the Switch 2 is on the way

Managing Expectations for June

While the confirmation ends years of speculation, the company is actively tempering expectations for its immediate future. Furukawa clarified that the upcoming Nintendo Direct, set for June, will focus exclusively on the software lineup for the second half of 2024.

“Please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation,” the president stated. Given that Nintendo’s fiscal year concludes in March, investors and fans may have to wait until as late as spring 2025 for the official reveal of the new hardware.

A Legacy of Hardware Success

The original Switch, which debuted in 2015, stands as one of the most successful consoles in history. To date, Nintendo has moved over 141 million units, securing its position as the third-best-selling console of all time, behind the PlayStation 2 and the Nintendo DS.

The system’s longevity is credited to its unique hybrid design, allowing for both handheld and docked play. Its market presence was further bolstered by the 2020 pandemic, which triggered a 73% surge in sales between March and November of that year, largely driven by the release of “Animal Crossing: New Horizons.”

Current Market Performance

The announcement arrived alongside the company’s latest quarterly earnings, which highlighted a 12.6% year-over-year decline in hardware sales—a standard trend for a platform nearing the end of its lifecycle. Despite its age, the console remains a powerhouse due to a steady stream of high-profile titles:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Sold 20.6 million copies over the past year.
  • Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Reached 13.44 million copies sold.
  • Indie Ecosystem: Continued support through the Nintendo eShop and access to legacy titles.

As Nintendo prepares to transition to its next generation, the industry watches closely to see if the successor can replicate the commercial momentum of its predecessor.
