Spotify Expands Into Physical Book Sales in US and UK

Spotify is officially bridging the gap between digital audio and physical literature. The streaming giant has launched a new feature allowing users in the United States and the United Kingdom to purchase physical books directly through its application.

This integration functions through a partnership with Bookshop.org, an online platform dedicated to supporting independent bookstores. When browsing audiobook pages, listeners will now encounter a “Get a copy for your bookshelf” button. Selecting this option redirects the user to the Bookshop.org website, where all aspects of the transaction—including pricing, inventory management, and shipping—are handled.

Rollout and Platform Availability

The feature is currently available for users on Android devices. Spotify confirmed that iOS users can expect access to the physical book purchasing tool starting next week.

This expansion aligns with Spotify’s broader push toward increased profitability. The company, which recently reported reaching 751 million monthly active listeners, is positioning itself as a comprehensive hub for readers and listeners alike, complementing recent subscription price hikes in both the U.S. and European markets.

Advancements in Audiobook Features

Alongside the physical sales integration, Spotify is rolling out several enhancements to its audiobook experience, building on announcements first made in February:

  • Page Match Expansion: The tool that allows users to scan pages from physical or e-books to sync with audio now supports 30 additional languages, including Swedish, German, and French.
  • Increased Engagement: Data shows that users leveraging Page Match stream 55% more audiobook hours weekly. Furthermore, 62% of titles accessed via this feature were previously unstreamed by those users.
  • Audiobook Recaps: Now officially available on Android, this feature offers short, personalized audio summaries to help users catch up on their progress in a story.
  • Audiobook Charts: Following successful launches in the U.S. and U.K., Spotify’s dedicated charts for trending audiobooks are now live in Germany.

By integrating these discovery and utility tools, Spotify aims to streamline the transition between reading a physical page and listening to a digital narrative, further solidifying its footprint in the competitive bookselling landscape.
