Sony Testing PS VR2 Support for PC Gaming

Sony is preparing to expand the ecosystem of its PlayStation VR2 headset by enabling support for PC gaming. The company confirmed this week that it is currently in the testing phase to allow players to access a wider library of titles beyond those exclusive to the PlayStation 5.

Sony’s PS VR2 is getting compatibility, possibly by end of year

The announcement appeared within a recent PlayStation.Blog update focused on upcoming software releases for the platform. Gillen McAllister, Sony Interactive Content Communications Manager, stated that the initiative aims to provide “even more game variety” for existing users.

Expanding the PS VR2 Library

While specific technical details remain scarce, the company expressed an intention to roll out this compatibility within 2024. The move addresses a long-standing critique of the hardware: its reliance on a closed ecosystem.

By integrating PC support, Sony could significantly alter the headset’s market position. Key factors currently influencing the VR landscape include:

  • Platform Exclusivity: The PS VR2 has historically been limited to PS5 titles, separating it from the broader PC-based VR community.
  • Content Availability: Access to the vast Windows-based library would instantly increase the number of experiences available to headset owners.
  • Market Focus: Unlike competitors such as Apple or Meta, which emphasize spatial computing and productivity, Sony continues to prioritize dedicated gaming experiences.

The decision to open the hardware to PC titles underscores the ongoing challenge of sustaining content for mixed reality devices. Although the company noted it “hopes” to deliver this feature before the end of the year, the timeline remains subject to the progress of current testing.
