Frost Giant turns to community funding amid VC gaming slump

As VCs slow gaming investments, Frost Giant turns to community for fresh capital

Frost Giant, the startup behind the upcoming real-time strategy (RTS) title Stormgate, is pivoting to its player base to secure additional operating capital. This shift arrives as the venture capital environment for gaming developers faces a significant downturn, marking a strategic move to maintain financial momentum ahead of the game’s anticipated launch later this year.

The company has initiated an equity crowdfunding round via Start Engine. This decision follows a successful performance on Kickstarter, where the studio generated $2.4 million in revenue by offering supporters various digital and physical perks, including beta access and Discord community privileges, to more than 28,000 backers.

Navigating a Challenging Investment Climate

For gaming studios, the current macroeconomic climate is starkly different from 2022, when Frost Giant secured a $25 million Series A round. Global venture investment into the gaming sector plummeted by 79% last year, with U.S.-based funding experiencing an even steeper decline of 86%. By tapping into community capital, Frost Giant aims to extend its financial runway post-launch, potentially placing the studio in a stronger position to attract future institutional investment once the game generates initial revenue.

Tim Morten, CEO and production director at Frost Giant, noted that the team was “positively surprised” by the enthusiasm surrounding their initial Kickstarter campaign. While the studio maintains that Stormgate is already fully funded for its primary release, the new equity offering—structured as a Regulation Crowdfunding (Reg CF) deal—provides a buffer for post-release operations. The company has already seen over $611,421 in reservations for this new round.

Building on RTS Heritage

Frost Giant carries significant industry weight, bolstered by a veteran team with roots in iconic titles such as StarCraft II and Warcraft III. This pedigree has helped build anticipation for Stormgate, which is currently the 36th most wishlisted game on Steam, boasting over 50,000 followers on the platform.

The studio’s approach to monetization will lean into the free-to-play model, focusing on in-game content similar to the co-op modes and cosmetic options popularized in its predecessors. As the industry faces a broader shift in how games are financed and sustained, Frost Giant’s reliance on its community represents a growing trend among studios seeking to bypass the current hesitation in the traditional venture capital market.

With an early access launch targeted for Q3 2024, the studio is now preparing to transition from development to a live-service environment, where the ultimate success of the project will depend on its ability to convert early interest into a sustained, active player base.
