Tencent Expands Honor of Kings to MENA and Beyond

Tencent is aggressively pushing its flagship mobile title, Honor of Kings, into new international territories. Starting February 21, the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game officially launches across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Eastern Europe, and South Asia, marking a significant step in the studio’s global growth strategy.

Tencent’s gaming cash cow Honor of Kings sets sights on MENA

The expansion is spearheaded by TiMi Studios, the developer behind the hit, which has seen strong early interest. According to recent data, the game has already secured over 3 million pre-registrations in these new regions. This follows an initial international foray in 2023, which began with a rollout in Brazil.

A Strategy for Global Scaling

Honor of Kings maintains a staggering daily user base of roughly 100 million players, predominantly within China. Since its 2015 debut, it has transformed into a cultural phenomenon, credited with popularizing mobile esports and pioneering the use of “loot boxes”—randomized in-game rewards that have become a cornerstone of the title’s monetization.

Financial performance remains robust; the game ranked as the world’s second-highest-grossing mobile title in December, sitting just behind Monopoly Go!, as reported by Sensor Tower. However, Tencent’s previous attempts to capture Western audiences proved difficult. A 2017 effort, Arena of Valor, served as a Westernized iteration of the game but failed to gain significant momentum, a result many analysts attributed to cultural disconnects and internal management errors.

Building Infrastructure and Esports Presence

To ensure this second attempt succeeds, Tencent is relying on Level Infinite, its international publishing arm established in 2021 with headquarters in Singapore and Amsterdam. The publisher is tasked with bridging the gap between the game’s domestic dominance and international market preferences.

A key pillar of this strategy involves building a competitive ecosystem. As part of its international push, the game will be featured at the Esports World Cup in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this summer, boasting a $3 million prize pool for 12 participating teams.

Future Roadmap

The MENA region serves as a critical testing ground for Tencent’s broader ambitions. Following this week’s launch, the company intends to bring Honor of Kings to North America, Western Europe, and the remainder of South America later in 2024. The success of these upcoming releases will determine whether Tencent can finally translate its massive Chinese revenue engine into a truly global gaming powerhouse.
