Spotify Acquires WhoSampled to Power New Discovery Tools

Spotify announced on Wednesday its acquisition of WhoSampled, the prominent community-driven database dedicated to tracking music samples, remixes, and covers. The deal, which brings both the London-based team and their extensive archive under the streaming giant’s umbrella, marks a significant push to deepen listener engagement with the history behind the tracks they stream.

While financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed, the move integrates WhoSampled’s massive repository—which currently catalogs over 1.2 million songs and nearly 622,000 individual samples—into Spotify’s infrastructure. This data is already being leveraged for the company’s newly announced music discovery tool, SongDNA.

A Long-Standing Relationship

The collaboration between the two entities is not new. WhoSampled has been known to the streaming service for years, having established a partnership as early as 2016 that allowed users to bridge their Spotify playlists and saved tracks with the WhoSampled platform.

According to the team behind WhoSampled, the acquisition aligns with a shared vision regarding the importance of musical context. “Through our recent discussions with Spotify, it became clear that we share a strong belief in the power of musical context — and a vision for helping listeners go deeper into the songs they love,” the team stated in their official announcement.

What Changes for Users

Despite the acquisition, WhoSampled will continue to operate as a stand-alone platform. However, the integration into Spotify’s ecosystem is expected to bring several immediate benefits to the user experience:

  • Removal of Ads: The platform will eliminate display advertisements in the coming weeks.
  • Free Mobile Access: The mobile application will transition to a free download model with no subscription fees.
  • Enhanced Moderation: Submission processing times for new content will be significantly reduced.

WhoSampled, which launched in 2008, operates with a lean team of approximately 10 employees. By joining Spotify, the platform aims to scale its operations while maintaining the community-driven curation that has defined its reputation in the music industry for over a decade.
