Meta Launches Instagram Plus Subscription With New Features

Meta has officially initiated testing for a new premium subscription service tailored for everyday users on Instagram. Dubbed “Instagram Plus,” the initiative aims to provide exclusive functionality to subscribers, marking a significant expansion of the company’s monetization strategy following earlier signals of intent to integrate paid tiers across its ecosystem, including Facebook and WhatsApp.

Meta starts testing a premium subscription on Instagram

The pilot program is currently live in select international markets. While the company has not released an official list of regions, user reports and social media activity confirm testing is underway in Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. Pricing structures are localized, with monthly costs appearing as MX$39 (roughly $2.20 USD) in Mexico, ¥319 (roughly $2 USD) in Japan, and PHP 65 (roughly $1.07 USD) in the Philippines.

Exclusive Features for Subscribers

Unlike the Meta Verified program, which focuses on security and verification for creators and businesses, Instagram Plus targets the general user base with tools designed to enhance content management and privacy:

  • Stealth Viewing: Subscribers can view Stories without the original poster receiving a notification.
  • Advanced Analytics: Access to data showing how many users have rewatched their own Stories.
  • Granular Audience Control: Capability to create unlimited custom audience lists for Stories, moving beyond the standard “Close Friends” restriction.
  • Extended Visibility: Options to extend the lifespan of a Story beyond 24 hours and “spotlight” a post once per week to ensure it appears at the front of followers’ feeds.
  • Enhanced Interaction: The ability to send animated “Superlikes” and search through viewer lists to identify if specific users have engaged with their content.

The introduction of this tier follows the success of subscription models from competitors. For instance, Snapchat+ recently reached 25 million subscribers, validating the market demand for premium social media experiences. However, the move has already sparked debate online, with some users expressing frustration regarding potential subscription fatigue.

Meta has stated that it plans to continue the testing phase to gather feedback before deciding on a broader rollout. As the company evaluates performance in these initial regions, the potential for expansion into additional markets remains a possibility.
