CONTEUDO:

Netflix is currently negotiating a potential licensing agreement to bring video podcasts from iHeartMedia to its streaming platform. The move marks a strategic effort by the company to expand its non-fiction library and challenge the dominance of YouTube in the podcasting space.

Strategic Exclusivity

According to Bloomberg, the discussions center on securing exclusive rights for these programs. If a contract is finalized, it would require iHeartMedia to remove its licensed video podcasts from YouTube. However, sources suggest that the agreement would likely cover only a portion of iHeartMedia’s extensive catalog rather than its entire library.

iHeartMedia manages a diverse range of popular shows, including:

  • The Breakfast Club
  • Las Culturistas
  • Jay Shetty Podcast
  • Stuff You Should Know

Expanding the Podcast Portfolio

This development follows a recent agreement between Netflix and Spotify. Under that partnership, a curated selection of content from Spotify Studios and The Ringer—covering sports, culture, lifestyle, and true crime—is coming to Netflix. Similar to the proposed iHeartMedia deal, content featured on Netflix under the Spotify arrangement will be pulled from YouTube, though it will remain accessible on Spotify itself.

It remains noteworthy that the Spotify deal does not encompass all programs; major titles like “The Joe Rogan Experience” will continue to be hosted on YouTube.

Competing with YouTube

Netflix is positioning these partnerships as a direct response to the growth of YouTube, which currently holds the top spot for video podcast consumption. YouTube surpassed 1 billion monthly active podcast viewers earlier this year, establishing a significant lead in the market. By aggressively pursuing exclusive licensing deals, Netflix aims to capture a larger share of the audience that consumes podcasts in a video format.
