Spotify Hits 500K Video Podcasts as Usage Soars

Spotify is rapidly transforming into a visual-first destination, with its latest earnings report revealing that the platform now hosts nearly half a million video podcasts. Over 390 million users have already streamed video content on the app, signaling a massive shift in how the streaming giant is capturing audience attention.

Rapid Growth in Visual Content

The company’s data shows a 54% year-over-year increase in video podcast engagement. This surge follows strategic updates, including the rollout of tools that allow creators to upload video content directly to the platform. By integrating interactive features like Q&As, comments, and polls, Spotify has successfully pivoted toward a social-network style experience.

The time users spend watching video content on the platform has more than doubled compared to last year. Additionally, consumption of video podcasts has climbed by over 80% since the January launch of the Spotify Partner Program (SPP), which introduced new monetization avenues for creators, including payouts based on Premium user engagement.

Strategic Distribution and Creator Focus

Looking ahead, Spotify is prioritizing a “ubiquity strategy” designed to make its podcasts available wherever listeners are. A key pillar of this plan is a new partnership with Netflix, set to begin in 2026, which will distribute Spotify video podcasts to a wider audience starting in the United States.

Incoming co-CEO Alex Norström emphasized that the goal is to position Spotify as the primary hub for creators. “When the creator wins, we win,” Norström explained to investors, noting that creators want to syndicate their work across multiple platforms. According to co-CEO Gustav Söderström, allowing this level of availability creates “revenue opportunities” while strengthening the platform’s overall creator offering.

Financial Performance and Future Outlook

While the company’s Q3 results were strong, the market reaction was mixed. Key financial highlights include:

  • Total monthly active users reached 713 million, an 11% year-over-year increase.
  • Quarterly revenue climbed to €4.27 billion (~$4.9 billion), exceeding Wall Street expectations.
  • The company reported a net profit of €899 million (~$1 billion) for the period.

Despite these gains, Spotify stock dipped following the report, as investors expressed caution regarding the company’s guidance for the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the firm continues to refine its advertising business, describing 2025 as a “transition year” before expecting growth to pick up in late 2026.

Part of this broader strategy includes optimizing the Apple TV experience to capture the growing demand for podcasts on television screens, reinforcing the company’s commitment to multi-platform accessibility.
