YouTube Upgrades TV App with AI Upscaling and Shopping QR
YouTube is aggressively expanding its footprint in the living room with a suite of new features designed to modernize its television interface. The platform, which captured 12.4% of total television viewing time in April according to Nielsen data, is rolling out tools focused on high-definition playback and direct-to-consumer shopping.

Enhancing Creator Revenue Through Shopping
To capitalize on the 35 billion hours of shopping-related content consumed annually, YouTube is integrating QR codes directly into video playback. This allows viewers to scan codes on their TV screens with mobile devices, granting immediate access to product pages. The platform is also testing timed product displays to further streamline the path to purchase.
This push is supported by strong financial growth for creators on the platform. Over the past year, the number of channels generating six-figure annual revenues specifically from TV screen viewership has climbed by more than 45%.
AI-Powered Visual Improvements
Visual fidelity is a major focus of these updates. YouTube is implementing AI-driven upscaling to automatically convert lower-resolution videos to full HD, with plans to eventually support 4K upscaling. Additionally, the platform is increasing its thumbnail file limit from 2MB to 50MB to accommodate high-resolution 4K previews.

While the company aims to match competitors in visual quality, the integration of AI upscaling remains a sensitive area in the streaming industry. Past implementations by other services, such as Netflix, have faced criticism for producing distorted imagery. YouTube maintains that creators will retain full control over their original files, and viewers can opt to watch content in its native resolution.
Navigation and Discovery Tweaks
The update also includes functional changes to how users navigate the app:
- Contextual Search: Searches initiated from a specific creator’s channel page will now prioritize that creator’s content rather than showing general platform-wide results.
- Immersive Previews: New preview functionality allows for smoother browsing through video libraries.
- Higher Quality Uploads: Selective testing is underway for larger file uploads to facilitate better streaming quality.
