MoviePass Launches Mogul Fantasy Film Platform to Public

MoviePass is moving beyond theater subscriptions with the public launch of Mogul, a fantasy platform that turns the Hollywood industry into a competitive game. After an initial private beta, the service is now accessible to the general public, including over 400,000 users who had been on the platform’s waiting list.

The platform applies the mechanics of daily fantasy sports to the film world. Users act as studio heads, managing a virtual portfolio of directors, actors, and specific film titles. Points are awarded based on the real-world performance of these assets, challenging players to balance their rosters with the same foresight required by major studio executives.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

Upon registration, each user is granted a budget of one million “Mogul Coin,” the platform’s internal currency. This budget is used to acquire talent and projects. For instance, high-profile projects like the sequel “Wicked: For Good” are valued at $100,000, while individual stars such as Ariana Grande or Cynthia Erivo, as well as director Jon M. Chu, are priced at $25,000 each.

The rules of the game include:

  • Strategic Swaps: Players are allowed two free roster swaps per week.
  • Profitability Focus: Competition is based on net profitability rather than simple gross revenue.
  • Timing Dynamics: Investing in a movie early is generally cheaper, with costs rising as the release date approaches.

MoviePass founder Stacy Spikes noted that the game is designed to mirror the complexities of the industry. Success requires a nuanced approach; for example, external factors—such as the sexual misconduct allegations currently surrounding “Tron: Ares” star Jared Leto—can impact a film’s performance in the game. Spikes also recommends that players look beyond major franchises, suggesting that independent films and international markets like Bollywood can offer significant returns for savvy managers.

Built on the Sui layer 1 blockchain, the platform tracks all trades and selections securely. The current fall season runs for 12 weeks through the end of December, aligning with the industry’s awards season. Participants are currently competing in a global league for a share of a $100,000 token prize pool. Users who activate their accounts by 11:59 p.m. ET on October 31 will receive Founding Member status and exclusive in-app badges.

Looking ahead, MoviePass plans to introduce private leagues for friends and dedicated mobile apps for iOS and Android. According to Spikes, the company is also exploring licensing agreements that could eventually allow users to compete for real-money stakes.
