Google Expands Gemini AI Sidebar to Chrome in India

Google is extending its Gemini AI integration for Chrome to new international markets, including India, Canada, and New Zealand. The update brings the browser’s side-panel assistant to desktop users in these regions, allowing for direct interaction with web content and Google’s suite of services.

The expansion includes localized support for several languages, specifically Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu, and Tamil, alongside English. This integration, previously limited to U.S. desktop users since its initial launch in September, is designed to streamline productivity by keeping the AI chatbot accessible without requiring users to switch tabs.

Functionality and Browser Integration

Once the feature is active, an “Ask Gemini” icon appears in the tab bar. Users can trigger this to summarize pages, generate quizzes, or pose questions about the content currently on their screen. The tool also supports cross-tab analysis, which is particularly useful for comparing details across multiple websites, such as shopping items or travel itineraries.

Beyond browsing, the sidebar acts as a bridge to other Google applications, including:

  • Gmail: Draft and send emails directly within the sidebar.
  • YouTube: Generate summaries of videos, complete with timestamp markers.
  • Personalized Assistance: Access information from Google Maps, Calendar, and Drive for contextual support, such as scheduling meetings or providing daily briefings.

Furthermore, Google is introducing the Nano Banana 2 generative AI tool for image transformation. This allows users to upload photos—such as an image of a room—and use the assistant to visualize how new furniture or decor might look in that space.

Mobile Availability and Limitations

In addition to the desktop rollout, Google confirmed that Gemini support is coming to Chrome for iOS in India. In this version, the feature will be accessible via a page tools icon located in the address bar.

While this expansion brings significant utility to international users, it does not include the full suite of “agentic” capabilities recently launched in the United States. Advanced features that allow the AI to actively navigate the browser and perform tasks on behalf of AI Pro and AI Ultra users remain unavailable in this latest release for India, Canada, and New Zealand. Chrome’s other newly supported languages further underscore Google’s focus on regional accessibility.
