Apple Warns iPhone Prices May Rise Due to Memory Shortage

Apple customers may soon face higher price tags on upcoming hardware releases as the company struggles with a global surge in memory and storage component costs. Outgoing CEO Tim Cook recently characterized the current supply chain environment as “unsustainable,” noting that the company can no longer absorb the fourfold increase in chip prices seen over the past year.

AI is hurting Apple in more ways than one: it may force iPhone price increases

The shortage, frequently dubbed “RAMageddon” by industry observers, is largely driven by the massive hardware demands of artificial intelligence. While Cook did not specify which particular devices would see price adjustments, he confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that consumer-facing price hikes have become unavoidable.

Supply Chain Pressures and Future Hardware

The timing of these warnings suggests that Apple’s next generation of devices, including the iPhone expected to launch in September, could be the first to reflect these market realities. Memory supply experts speaking with the Financial Times indicated that the iPhone is a primary candidate for price increases given its heavy reliance on DRAM and NAND storage.

Research firm TechInsights estimates that to maintain current profit margins, Apple would need to increase the price of its next Pro-tier iPhone by approximately $270. Currently, the iPhone 17 Pro carries a starting price of $1,099.

A Challenging Transition for Leadership

The hardware cost crisis represents a significant hurdle for incoming CEO John Ternus, who has previously voiced concerns regarding the impact of these surging costs on the company’s bottom line. The situation is further complicated by the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced AI features across its ecosystem:

  • Increased Hardware Demand: Enhanced on-device AI processing requires more memory, further straining supply.
  • Previous AI Hurdles: Apple paid a $250 million settlement earlier this year following a lawsuit over unfulfilled AI feature promises.
  • Strategic Shifts: The recent Worldwide Developers Conference highlighted a major overhaul of Siri, signaling that Apple remains committed to resource-heavy AI implementations despite the rising costs of the underlying hardware.

Cook’s warnings echo statements made in April, when he first signaled that elevated expenses could influence the company’s future business results. As Apple continues to pivot toward an AI-centric product roadmap, the dependency on high-capacity memory chips appears set to keep pressure on consumer pricing for the foreseeable future.
