Pixi App Brings AI-Powered AR Characters to iMessage

Messaging is evolving beyond static stickers and GIFs. A new startup, Pixi, has officially launched its App Store application, introducing interactive augmented reality (AR) characters that function directly within iMessage. These AI-driven entities don’t just sit on the screen; they inhabit the recipient’s physical space through their iPhone camera, reacting to the environment and responding to real-time cues.

The app is the brainchild of founder Mark Drummond, a veteran of Apple and DreamWorks Animation. His goal is to move digital communication away from traditional e-cards toward a more spontaneous, shared experience. By leveraging on-device AI, Pixi characters can perceive their surroundings—for example, a virtual cat might react if a real dog enters the frame.

How the Technology Works

To ensure user privacy, all visual and audio processing is handled locally on the user’s device. During demonstrations, the characters have shown the ability to interpret emotional cues, such as reacting to a user’s smile. The launch lineup includes:

  • A cat
  • A robot
  • An animated envelope that can chase users or be used to “attack” friends playfully
  • Integrated games like tic-tac-toe and whack-a-mole

Future Plans and Creator Marketplace

Drummond envisions Pixi as a platform for more than just internal characters. The company plans to open a marketplace where brands and independent creators can distribute their own interactive personalities. There is also a long-term roadmap to allow users to generate their own custom characters using AI prompts.

Currently, the app is compatible with iPhone 11 and newer models. While it is launching as an iMessage integration, the team has confirmed intentions to expand to Android devices and other major messaging platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram. Though the app is free for users, the platform will support a model where brands may choose to charge for their specific digital characters.
