Friend AI Spent Over $1M on NYC Subway Advertising Blitz

The startup behind the wearable AI device known as Friend has funneled more than $1 million into an aggressive advertising campaign across the New York City subway system. The move represents a high-stakes effort to capture public attention for the $129 hardware, which has already faced significant scrutiny.

AI startup Friend spent more than $1M on all those subway ads

CEO Avi Schiffmann confirmed the scale of the operation to Adweek, detailing a logistics-heavy rollout that includes:

  • Over 11,000 individual cards placed inside subway cars.
  • 1,000 posters displayed across various platforms.
  • 130 urban panels throughout the transit network.

In certain transit hubs, such as the West 4th Street station, the branding has become pervasive, effectively blanketing the space. Schiffmann characterized the venture as a “huge gamble,” openly admitting that the expenditure has left his company with limited remaining capital.

A Controversial Strategy

While the CEO claims this is the “world’s first major AI campaign,” the reception has been polarized. The product itself has drawn sharp criticism, including a recent Wired report that labeled the device a tool for constant surveillance. This sentiment has spilled over into the physical world, with commuters vandalizing the subway ads with messages accusing the company of “surveillance capitalism.”

Schiffmann noted that he anticipated a frosty reception, acknowledging that New Yorkers are particularly skeptical of artificial intelligence. He explained that the minimalist, white-space design of the ads was a deliberate choice intended to provoke social commentary and engagement in a city he believes is the most resistant to AI technology in the country.
