Lootlock: New App Curbs Kids’ Gaming Overspending

Gaming-related credit card debt has become a growing concern for families, with children often running up unauthorized bills worth thousands of dollars. To address this, fintech developer Nick Pompa created Lootlock, a platform designed to provide parents with strict, granular control over their children’s digital spending.

The app functions by issuing a prepaid digital credit card through a partnership with Transcard. Parents can automate allowance deposits and restrict spending specifically to gaming products, preventing children from making unintended purchases elsewhere online.

Addressing Industry Tactics

Pompa, who describes himself as an avid gamer, noted that the industry has shifted toward aggressive micro-transactions over the past decade. Regulatory bodies, including the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), have previously warned that gaming companies often employ design tricks and player tracking to encourage spending among minors.

While the FTC has occasionally intervened—such as the $126 million refund mandate for Fortnite—parents generally lack formal recourse when children make unauthorized charges. Lootlock aims to provide a proactive solution.

Gamifying Financial Literacy

Beyond simple spending limits, the app integrates educational elements to teach responsible financial habits:

  • Bounty Boards: Launching in October, this feature allows parents to list chores that, when completed, unlock additional funds for the child.
  • Avatar Rewards: Children earn points for checking balances and practicing good spending habits, which can be used to customize a persistent avatar.
  • Parental Approval: Increases in spending limits can be authorized by parents directly via text message.

Currently, the bootstrapped company operates with a team of seven. Lootlock is set to present its solution at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, highlighting the growing demand for specialized fintech tools tailored for families navigating the modern digital gaming landscape.
