Firefox to Allow Users to Disable All Generative AI Features

Mozilla is shifting its strategy to prioritize user autonomy by introducing a comprehensive suite of AI controls in the Firefox browser. Starting with the release of version 148 on February 24, users will gain the ability to disable all generative AI features, ensuring that those who prefer a traditional browsing experience are not interrupted by automated enhancements.

The update introduces a dedicated settings section for AI management. A primary “Block AI enhancements” toggle will allow individuals to opt out of all current and future AI-driven capabilities. Once enabled, this setting prevents the appearance of prompts, reminders, or pop-ups related to AI tools integrated into the browser.

Customizable AI Preferences

For users who prefer a selective approach, the new interface provides granular control over individual features. These include:

• Translations: Automated language processing for web browsing.
• PDF Enhancements: AI-generated alt text for documents.
• Organization Tools: AI-powered tab grouping and link previews.
• Sidebar Chatbots: Integration with third-party services like ChatGPT, Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, and Le Chat Mistral.

The company stated in a blog post that the decision stems from direct community feedback. “We’ve heard from many who want nothing to do with AI,” Mozilla noted, emphasizing that their commitment to user choice remains a core pillar of the browser’s development.

Mozilla’s Strategic Direction

This move aligns with the vision outlined by CEO Anthony Enzor-DeMeo, who took the helm in December. Enzor-DeMeo has maintained that while the organization intends to continue investing in AI, these tools must remain optional. “AI should always be a choice — something people can easily turn off,” he wrote in a blog post regarding the company’s future.

Mozilla is navigating a shifting browser landscape where legacy giants face mounting pressure from challengers like Arc, Perplexity, and Opera. Beyond browser features, the organization is positioning itself as a counterweight to the rapid, often opaque development of AI models by industry leaders.

According to a report by CNBC, Mozilla President Mark Surman is spearheading an effort to build an “AI rebel alliance.” The initiative involves a $1.4 billion investment of reserves to support startups and public-interest technologists focused on AI transparency, aiming to challenge the dominance of companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.
