Splat App Uses AI to Turn Photos Into Kids’ Coloring Pages
The development team behind the photo-sharing platform Retro is expanding its creative horizons with the launch of Splat. This new mobile application utilizes generative AI to transform standard photographs into custom coloring book pages, offering an alternative to the often cluttered or paywalled websites currently dominating the printable activity market.
How Splat Works
Users can initiate the creative process by uploading an existing photo from their Camera Roll or capturing a new image directly within the app. After selecting the source material, the user chooses from various artistic styles, including:
- Anime
- 3D movie
- Manga
- Cartoon
- Comic
Once the selection is made, the generative AI engine converts the image into a line-art format. Parents can then choose to print the output for traditional coloring or allow their children to color digitally on-screen, providing a distraction-free alternative to standard mobile games or video streaming.
Subscription and Access
The app bypasses complex account creation by guiding users through a customization setup upon first launch, where parents can select child-friendly categories such as space, robots, animals, and fairy tales. To prevent unauthorized access to settings or purchases, the app implements a parental gate that requires the user to enter their birth year.
Following a trial project, Splat operates on a subscription model:
- Weekly: $4.99 for up to 25 pages.
- Annual: $49.99 for up to 500 pages.
Splat is currently available for download on both iOS and Android platforms as part of a growing trend of AI-integrated tools designed to encourage children’s creativity.
