Amazon Adds Conversational AI to Ring Doorbell Greetings
Amazon is expanding its Alexa+ capabilities by introducing an intelligent, conversational feature to Ring doorbells. Known as Greetings, this update allows the smart doorbell to interact autonomously with people at the door, ranging from delivery personnel to unexpected visitors.
The system leverages visual analysis to interpret who is standing at the doorstep by observing their clothing, actions, and any items they may be carrying. Based on these observations, the device executes specific instructions programmed by the homeowner:
- Deliveries: Users can provide instructions on where to leave packages, offer water or snacks to couriers, or inquire about return times if a signature is required.
- Solicitation: Homeowners can set automated, polite declines for sales representatives or service vendors.
- Personal Visits: If the resident is unavailable, Alexa can greet friends and family, inviting them to leave a recorded message.
Amazon clarified that the technology relies on video descriptions to categorize the subject in front of the camera rather than performing personal identification. Despite this, the feature carries inherent risks regarding misclassification. For instance, if a friend arrives wearing a logistics uniform, the system might mistakenly treat them as a courier and provide delivery instructions instead of offering a standard greeting.
This rollout arrives following the introduction of the “Familiar Faces” feature, which allows users to catalog up to 50 frequent visitors for identification in the Ring app notifications.
Currently, Greetings is available through the Alexa+ Early Access program for customers in the United States and Canada. To utilize the tool, users must have a subscription to the Ring Premium Plan and ensure that video description settings are active. The feature is compatible with the following hardware:
- Ring Wired Doorbell Pro (3rd Gen)
- Ring Wired Doorbell Plus (2nd Gen)
