Meta Revamps Facebook With Focus on Friends and Marketplace

Meta is shifting its strategic focus back to the core social features that originally defined Facebook, announcing a comprehensive redesign of its flagship mobile app. The update, rolling out globally in the coming weeks, moves away from the company’s recent preoccupation with virtual reality and the metaverse to prioritize user-to-user interaction and high-demand utilities like Facebook Marketplace.

The redesign comes as Meta recalibrates its social networking priorities. While the platform continues to reach billions of users, growth has remained stagnant in major markets like the United States. By elevating popular tools and modernizing the interface, the company aims to revitalize the app’s appeal, particularly among a younger demographic that has shown a strong preference for Marketplace.

Elevating Marketplace and Social Tools

Data from a 2025 eMarketer report indicates that over half of Gen Z users in the U.S. utilize Facebook Marketplace. To capitalize on this engagement, Meta is moving the tool from the buried “More” menu directly to the app’s bottom navigation bar, placing it alongside Reels and Friends.

The interface overhaul introduces several features designed to align the Facebook experience with modern social media habits, including:

  • Double-tap to like: Users can now react to photos in their Feed with a double-tap, a gesture popularized by Instagram.
  • Visual enhancements: Photos will appear in a standardized grid, with options for full-screen viewing.
  • Improved content creation: Tools for tagging friends and adding music to Stories and posts are now more prominent.
  • Refined navigation: A customizable navigation bar allows users to better tailor their experience.

Community and Profile Updates

Meta is also introducing changes to how users interact within groups and comment sections. Replies will become more streamlined, and new pinning tools will assist creators and group admins in managing conversations. Additionally, a new anonymous flagging feature will allow users to report disruptive behavior more easily.

Personal profiles are receiving a significant update, allowing users to highlight personal interests, such as favorite music, TV shows, and travel destinations. These additions are part of an effort to foster connections based on shared hobbies. In a move to improve user control, profile updates—such as changing a cover photo—will no longer be automatically pushed to the Feed unless the user explicitly chooses to share them.

Finally, the app is enhancing its search functionality with an immersive grid layout and a new full-screen viewer for photos and videos, ensuring users can explore content without losing their place in the app. Users will also gain more granular feedback options in the Feed to signal why they dislike specific content, further personalizing the overall experience.
