Google Photos 2025 Recap Adds Gemini AI for Highlights
Google has officially rolled out its 2025 Recap for Google Photos users, introducing deeper integration with its Gemini AI to curate year-end memories. The feature, which functions similarly to other annual digital retrospectives, now leverages artificial intelligence to analyze image archives and provide a personalized narrative of the past year.

Gemini AI Integration
For users in the United States, the 2025 Recap utilizes Gemini models to understand the context of stored images. This allows the system to surface specific highlights, such as identifying a user’s “one true passion” and selecting the four most significant moments of the year. By analyzing visual data, the AI aims to create a more relevant summary of personal experiences than previous automated collections.
Data Insights and Customization
Beyond the AI-enhanced highlights, the Recap provides a detailed breakdown of yearly photo activity. Users can view:
- Total photo count for the year.
- Identification of top people captured.
- A new, dedicated selfie count.
Privacy remains a focus, as Google has added functionality to hide specific individuals or images from the Recap. If a user chooses to exclude certain content, they can trigger a regeneration of the review to produce an updated version.

Sharing and Accessibility
Google has streamlined the sharing process, allowing users to export recaps to social platforms or group chats. A new partnership with CapCut provides an export button at the end of the Recap, enabling further customization using specialized templates. Additionally, a new carousel format includes short videos and collages optimized for sharing, including a direct option for WhatsApp Status.
The Recap will be available throughout December. Users who do not see the feature immediately can trigger its generation via an option at the top of the Google Photos app. Once generated, it remains accessible through the Memories carousel or the Collections tab. The company also confirmed that additional 2025 highlight sets will be released throughout the remainder of the month.
