Perplexity brings AI-powered Comet browser to Android
Perplexity is expanding the reach of its AI-focused browsing experience by launching the Comet browser on Android today. Initially introduced for desktop users in July, the platform aims to integrate artificial intelligence directly into the web navigation process.
The Android release brings most of the desktop version’s capabilities to mobile devices. Users can set Perplexity as their default search engine and utilize the assistant to interact with open tabs. Key features include the ability to summarize searches across multiple tabs, use voice commands to query open pages, and leverage an integrated ad blocker.
Expanding Mobile Capabilities
The company noted that Android was prioritized due to interest from carriers and OEMs, although no specific hardware partnerships for pre-installation were announced alongside this launch. While Perplexity previously partnered with Motorola to preload its core app on devices, it remains unclear if that agreement extends to the new Comet browser.
Looking ahead, the development roadmap for the mobile app includes:
- A conversational agent capable of cross-site searching and task execution.
- Customizable shortcuts for the assistant to perform rapid actions.
- A fully integrated password manager.
The AI Browser Landscape
The move comes as various tech players, including OpenAI, Opera, and The Browser Company, compete to challenge incumbents like Chrome and Safari. While many have focused on desktop environments, Perplexity is betting on mobile utility to gain traction.
Security remains a central concern for these AI-driven tools. In October, the startup published a blog post addressing the vulnerabilities associated with AI agents, specifically regarding prompt injection, and emphasized the need for a fundamental rethink of security paradigms in the AI era.
Perplexity confirmed that an iOS version of Comet is currently in development and expected to arrive soon.
