Mixup App Transforms AI Image Creation Into Social Game
The team behind the 3D design platform Rooms is entering the generative AI space with a new iOS application called Mixup. Developed by Things, Inc., the app shifts the focus from complex prompt engineering to a collaborative, social experience that functions similarly to a digital party game.

How the “Recipe” System Works
Instead of staring at a blank text box, users interact with “recipes”—fill-in-the-blank prompts that guide the creative process. Whether transforming a hand-drawn sketch into a Renaissance-style painting or placing a pet in a costume, the app relies on Google’s Nano Banana model to maintain visual consistency.
Jason Toff, founder and CEO of Things, Inc., noted that the current generative AI landscape suffers from a “slot machine” problem, where users struggle to predict or control outputs. “Generative AI is so powerful, and yet most of the time you go to these tools and it’s like, here’s your text box—come up with something creative. And what do you write?” said Toff, whose background includes product management roles at Twitter, Google, and Meta.

Social Features and “Mixables”
The core of Mixup is its public feed, where users can publish their creations and share the recipes behind them. Other users can tap “Try recipe” to apply those same parameters to their own photos or doodles. The app also introduces a feature called “mixables,” which allows followers to create AI images using the likeness of users who opt-in to the feature.
