Adobe Firefly Adds Quick Cut to Automate Video Drafts

Adobe is expanding the capabilities of its Firefly video editor with the introduction of “Quick Cut,” a new AI-driven feature designed to generate initial video drafts from raw footage. By processing user instructions, the tool handles the time-consuming process of selecting clips and arranging transitions automatically.

Instead of manually importing files and curating sequences, creators can now rely on natural language commands to dictate the desired outcome. The system identifies and removes irrelevant footage, intelligently organizes takes, and inserts transitions using the provided B-roll. Users retain control over specific project parameters, such as aspect ratio, pacing, and the inclusion of additional B-roll assets, which can be applied to entire timelines or individual selected clips.

Streamlining the Creative Workflow

The primary objective of Quick Cut is to accelerate the early stages of production. Adobe emphasizes that the feature produces a foundational draft, leaving the final creative polish, such as fine-tuning transitions and specific clip placement, to the editor.

Mike Folgner, product lead for AI and next-generation video tools at Adobe, noted that the company’s focus remains on removing repetitive technical hurdles. “The biggest problem they actually communicate is the need for fast turnaround, the need for time-saving techniques that just let them get to their creative vision as fast as possible,” Folgner stated.

According to Folgner, the goal is to bypass the “mundane parts” of post-production—such as organizing selects—allowing creators to focus on their unique narrative style. “They find joy in putting their spin on it. So Quick Cut is meant to help creators who have a set of media find the story very quickly,” he added.

Expanding AI Capabilities

This update follows a series of recent enhancements to Adobe’s video suite. In December, the company debuted a timeline-based editor that introduced layer-based management and prompt-based adjustments, allowing users to manipulate specific objects within a video through simple text commands.

Current features within the Firefly ecosystem now include:

• Prompt-based editing: Control over color grading, camera angles, and object manipulation.
• Timeline management: granular control over frames and audio characteristics.
• B-roll integration: The ability to select frames from supplementary footage to generate custom transitions using Firefly’s video models.
