Apple Debuts New Studio Displays With Thunderbolt 5 Power
Apple has expanded its hardware lineup with the introduction of two high-performance monitors: the new Studio Display, priced at $1,599, and the premium Studio Display XDR, starting at $3,299. The launch complements the company’s latest MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models, which now run on the latest M5-series chips.
Connectivity and Enhanced Audio
Both 27-inch monitors now feature Thunderbolt 5 ports. This upgrade enables users to daisy-chain up to four displays and connects seamlessly with a variety of professional accessories. Apple includes a Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable in the box to support these high-bandwidth connections.
The audio and video experience has also been overhauled across the range. The new models include:
- A 12MP Center Stage camera for sharper video conferencing.
- Support for Desk View, allowing users to capture their face and desk surface simultaneously.
- A three-microphone array paired with a six-speaker sound system, delivering 30% deeper bass compared to previous generations and full Spatial Audio support.
Display Specifications and Pro Features
The standard Studio Display offers a 5K Retina resolution with over 14 million pixels, 600 nits of brightness, and full support for the P3 wide-gamut color standard.
For professional workflows, the Studio Display XDR pushes specifications further. It incorporates a mini-LED backlight system with more than 2,000 local dimming zones. Key performance metrics include:
- Brightness: 1000 nits SDR; up to 2000 nits peak HDR brightness.
- Contrast Ratio: 1,000,000:1.
- Refresh Rate: 120Hz with Adaptive Sync support.
- Color: Adobe RGB coverage.
The XDR variant is also tailored for specialized environments, featuring DICOM medical imaging presets. It includes a Medical Imaging Calibrator, though Apple notes this feature is currently pending FDA clearance in the U.S.
Both display models are available in standard or nano-texture glass configurations. While the base Studio Display features a tilt-adjustable stand, the XDR model adds height-adjustment capabilities. Customers can begin placing preorders on March 4, with official availability starting March 11.
