Apple Now Produces 25% of iPhones in India
Apple has officially reached a significant production milestone, with India now accounting for 25% of the company’s total iPhone output. This shift marks the realization of a target initially projected by JPMorgan analysts back in 2022, underscoring the tech giant’s persistent strategy to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond China.
According to data reported by Bloomberg, India produced 55 million units out of the approximately 220 million to 230 million iPhones manufactured globally last year. Apple’s commitment to the region has intensified rapidly, highlighted by the decision to manufacture the entire iPhone 17 lineup in India ahead of the September launch. CEO Tim Cook has confirmed that the majority of U.S. consumer demand is currently being met by devices assembled in Indian facilities.
Strategic Diversification and Geopolitical Pressure
The acceleration of this transition throughout 2025 was driven by increasing uncertainty regarding operations in China, particularly as evolving U.S. tariff regulations complicated supply chain planning. The scale of this move has drawn high-level attention; during a business summit in Doha this past May, President Donald Trump personally cautioned Tim Cook against further expanding manufacturing operations in India.
India as a Growing Consumer Hub
Beyond its role as a manufacturing powerhouse, India is evolving into a critical retail market for Apple. Market intelligence firm Counterpoint reports that Apple shipped 14 million units within the country last year, representing a 9% year-over-year increase. Other key developments in the region include:

- The company opened its sixth Indian retail store last month.
- Apple is reportedly engaged in discussions to introduce Apple Pay to the Indian market later this year.
