Apple is preparing to place privacy at the center of its artificial intelligence strategy during the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference in June. As the company works to overhaul Siri, new reports suggest the assistant will adopt stricter data retention policies to differentiate itself from competitors.
A Privacy-Focused AI Strategy
According to data shared by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple leadership intends to position its AI efforts as a more secure alternative to existing market offerings. This approach is viewed as a critical step in reasserting the tech giant’s relevance within the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
The centerpiece of this update is expected to be a standalone Siri application. While the tool will provide a chatbot experience similar to ChatGPT, it is reportedly being built with significant constraints on how long user data is stored or utilized by the system.
New Data Retention Controls
Central to this privacy-first model is a proposed feature that mirrors the functionality found in Apple’s Messages app. Users may soon gain granular control over their interaction history, including options to:
- Automatically purge chat logs after 30 days.
- Set a one-year window for data retention.
- Retain conversation history indefinitely, if preferred.
The new app is expected to be powered by Google Gemini, marking a significant shift in Siri’s underlying architecture. However, industry observers note that Apple’s heavy emphasis on privacy could serve a dual purpose: highlighting a core brand value while potentially deflecting attention from the assistant’s functional limitations compared to rival products, as well as the involvement of Google in managing certain security aspects of the platform.
