Bluesky Roadmap 2026: Focus on Real-Time and Core Features

Bluesky is shifting its strategic focus for 2026 toward refining the platform’s core experience. After reaching a milestone of over 42 million users, the decentralized social network is prioritizing functional stability and real-time engagement to maintain its growth trajectory.

Alex Benzer, Bluesky’s head of product, outlined the company’s roadmap in a recent blog post, emphasizing that the platform must solidify its “basics” to ensure long-term user retention. This pivot comes amid recent industry data indicating a slowdown in engagement, with reports noting a 40% year-over-year decline in daily active users as of October 2025.

Enhancing Usability and Media

The roadmap addresses long-standing feature gaps compared to competitors like X and Threads. Benzer highlighted several key areas for immediate improvement:

  • Composer Updates: Streamlining media uploads and increasing the capacity for longer video content.
  • Content Flexibility: Expanding the ability to post more than four photos at once and simplifying the creation of threads.
  • Workflow Tools: Introducing support for drafts to improve the posting experience.

While users have frequently requested private accounts, the company noted that this remains a long-term goal tied to the underlying AT Protocol and will not be available in the immediate future.

Discoverability and Real-Time Engagement

To capture the energy of live events—such as sports or breaking news—Bluesky is building new curation tools. The goal is to provide timely custom feeds that make the platform feel more dynamic. Benzer mentioned plans to introduce topic tags within the Discover feed to better surface content relevant to individual interests and to refine “Who to follow” suggestions.

Furthermore, the company is leaning into the “Atmosphere”—the ecosystem of applications built on the AT Protocol. By enhancing interoperability, Bluesky aims to provide a more integrated experience. A current example is the “LIVE” badge that appears on user profiles when they are streaming on platforms like Twitch or Streamplace, with more integrations expected soon.
