The book-tracking application Tome has officially announced it is ceasing operations. The platform, which functioned as both a digital bookshelf and a social hub for literature enthusiasts, will shut down its servers and website on May 29.
Financial Viability and Competition
Despite building a user base of 100,000 readers, the company stated that the service was no longer financially sustainable. Maintaining a social platform that supported rich media features—such as GIFs, videos, and memes—proved too costly to scale effectively.

The Rise of Gen Z Readers
Tome had carved out a space by catering to the BookTok community, a demographic of Gen Z readers who share reviews and content on TikTok. While the movement originated largely with fans of “romantasy” titles, it has since expanded to encompass a broader spectrum of readers. The app allowed these users to document their reading progress, share playlists matching a book’s atmosphere, and curate visual collections of favorite quotes.
Regarding the upcoming shutdown, the company has provided instructions for users to export their personal data. This includes the ability to download saved posts, uploaded images, and a spreadsheet containing their historical reading updates.
The closure of Tome coincides with the exit of other services in the sector; notably, the recommendation site TBR is also scheduled to shut down this June.
