Daniel Ek Steps Down as Spotify CEO in Major Leadership Shift

Spotify is set for a significant transition in its executive leadership. Daniel Ek, the company’s founder and long-time chief executive, announced on Tuesday that he will step down from his current role by the end of this year to transition into the position of executive chairman.
New Leadership Structure
In his place, the streaming giant has appointed two internal leaders to share the chief executive responsibilities. Gustav Söderström, currently serving as co-president and chief product and technology officer, will step into the role of co-CEO alongside Alex Norström, the company’s current co-president and chief business officer.
Ek, who has led the organization since its inception in 2006, explained that this move formalizes a management structure that has been evolving behind the scenes for some time. “Over the last few years, I’ve turned over a large part of the day-to-day management and strategic direction of Spotify to Alex and Gustav — who have shaped the company from our earliest days and are now more than ready to guide our next phase,” Ek stated.
Focus on Long-Term Strategy
Regarding his new capacity as executive chairman, Ek noted that his attention will shift toward the company’s broader trajectory. “This change simply matches titles to how we already operate. In my role as Executive Chairman, I will focus on the long arc of the company and keep the Board and our co-CEOs deeply connected through my engagement,” he added.
The leadership pivot comes at a time of financial stability for the streaming platform. In a post shared on X, Ek highlighted that the business has maintained profitability for more than a year.
