Danish App Store Sees Surge in Anti-US Product Apps

Danish consumers are turning to mobile technology to enforce a grassroots boycott of American-made goods. This shift in shopping behavior follows recent threats from the U.S. government regarding the potential control of Greenland, a Danish territory, triggering a wave of economic pushback across the Nordic region.

Market intelligence provider Appfigures reports that two specific applications—NonUSA and Made O’Meter—have surged into the top 10 rankings on the Danish App Store this month. These tools are designed to identify the origin of consumer products and suggest local alternatives, effectively facilitating the ongoing boycott of U.S. products, which has already seen citizens canceling American vacations and terminating subscriptions to U.S.-based streaming platforms like Netflix.

Rapid Adoption of Boycott Tools

The rise in usage has been dramatic. Data indicates that average daily downloads for NonUSA and Made O’Meter across iOS and Android platforms jumped 867%—roughly 9.7 times higher—over the past seven days compared to the previous week.

  • NonUSA: Climbed to the No. 1 spot on the Danish App Store on Wednesday, a significant leap from its No. 441 position recorded on January 9.
  • Made O’Meter: Currently holds the No. 5 position on the App Store, serving as a secondary tool for consumers tracking product origins.

NonUSA functions by allowing users to scan product barcodes to verify if an item is American-made. If it is, the app provides suggestions for local Danish alternatives. This movement appears to have regional support, as the app’s top five markets currently include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland.

Market Context

While the ranking shift is significant, market analysts note that the Danish App Store has a smaller volume compared to the U.S. market. With total daily downloads across all categories in Denmark reaching approximately 200,000, achieving a top spot requires only a few thousand daily downloads. Despite the scale, the trend highlights a clear shift in consumer sentiment.

Other popular applications in the Danish top 10 currently include local services like the travel app Rejsekort. Meanwhile, American-based software remains prevalent in the charts, with titles such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Authenticator, and Shop continuing to see usage alongside the surge of boycott-focused tools.
