Disney-OpenAI Deal Grants Only One Year of Exclusivity

Disney has secured a strategic three-year partnership with OpenAI, but the agreement limits exclusivity to a single year. CEO Bob Iger confirmed that after this initial 12-month period, the entertainment giant will be free to pursue similar licensing deals with other artificial intelligence developers.

Disney’s OpenAI deal is exclusive for just one year — then it’s open season

The deal, finalized last week, integrates Disney’s vast library of intellectual property into OpenAI’s Sora video generation platform. Currently, OpenAI holds the sole legal authorization to utilize these assets for AI-generated content, which includes:

  • Over 200 iconic characters
  • Assets from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
  • Content from Pixar Animation Studios
  • The Star Wars franchise

For Disney, the collaboration serves as a controlled environment to evaluate the impact of generative AI on its business models. By partnering with OpenAI, the company aims to gauge how its intellectual property performs in an AI-driven creative space before committing to further long-term agreements.

“No human generation has ever stood in the way of technological advance, and we don’t intend to try,” Iger stated to CNBC. He added that the company’s philosophy is to embrace technological shifts, even when they threaten to disrupt existing operational frameworks.

The move comes amid a broader enforcement of Disney’s copyright interests. On the same day the OpenAI partnership was unveiled, Disney issued a cease-and-desist notice to Google, citing alleged copyright infringement. While Google has not directly addressed the specific claims, representatives indicated the company plans to engage in discussions with Disney regarding the matter.
