Duolingo CEO Addresses Backlash Over AI Strategy

Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn is pushing back against the narrative that his company’s transition to an “AI-first” model signals a move to replace human staff. Following significant public outcry earlier this year, the executive claims the controversy stemmed largely from a lack of transparency regarding the firm’s true intentions.

Duolingo CEO says controversial AI memo was misunderstood

In a recent interview with The New York Times, von Ahn addressed the friction caused by his strategic pivot. He noted that while the shift was viewed as standard evolution by internal teams, the external response was colored by skepticism toward publicly traded companies and fears regarding job security.

“Externally, as a publicly traded company some people assume that it’s just for profit. Or that we’re trying to lay off humans. And that was not the intent at all,” von Ahn explained.

Clarifying the Workforce Strategy

The CEO maintained that Duolingo has not terminated any full-time staff members as a result of its artificial intelligence integration. While he acknowledged reductions within the company’s contractor pool, he framed these adjustments as standard business operations rather than a systematic replacement of human labor.

  • Full-time staff: No layoffs linked to the AI transition.
  • Contractor workforce: Fluctuations are managed based on immediate project requirements, a practice the company has utilized since its inception.

Maintaining the AI Momentum

Despite the pushback, von Ahn remains committed to the company’s aggressive AI trajectory. The firm continues to prioritize experimentation with new technologies, dedicating time each week for employees to explore AI capabilities. In a lighthearted comment on the company’s internal culture, he mentioned that teams spend Friday mornings experimenting with the tech, referring to the practice as “f-r-A-I-days”—a term he humorously admitted is difficult to pronounce.

So far, the public criticism has not resulted in a measurable negative impact on Duolingo’s financial performance, suggesting that the company’s core user base remains engaged with the platform despite the high-level debates surrounding its technological direction.
