CONTEUDO:

Duolingo is significantly expanding its educational footprint by introducing advanced learning content at no cost. Starting this Wednesday, the platform began offering materials aligned with the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) across nine major languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

This expansion marks a departure from the app’s previous focus, which primarily capped lessons at the A2 or B1 levels. By targeting the B2 standard—an international benchmark recognized by employers and academic institutions—the company aims to bridge the gap between basic conversational skills and professional-grade fluency.

Features for Advanced Proficiency

The new curriculum is designed to move learners beyond simple translation-based exercises. Instead, it incorporates complex scenarios and specialized vocabulary to mimic real-world interactions. Key additions include:

  • Advanced Stories: Targeted modules to enhance reading comprehension through more intricate narratives.
  • DuoRadio: A podcast-style audio feature specifically engineered to improve listening comprehension in the target language.

According to Bozena Pajak, head of learning science at Duolingo, the goal is to democratize access to high-level language training. “Reaching job-ready proficiency in a new language used to be out of reach for most people,” Pajak noted. “It took years of expensive classes or immersive experiences that not everyone could access.”

Market Positioning and Strategy

The move places Duolingo in a unique position relative to competitors like Babbel and Busuu. While these platforms also offer B2-aligned content, they typically gate such features behind paid subscription models. By providing this tier for free, Duolingo is betting on user acquisition to bolster its ecosystem.

The decision arrives as the company navigates a shifting financial landscape. While the firm reported 52.7 million daily active users in its Q4 earnings—a 30% year-over-year increase—it faces pressure from investors following a decline in share value linked to projected growth forecasts for Q2 2026.

For users, the update offers a practical tool for career advancement. Research from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages suggests that second-language acquisition can boost a candidate’s employability by up to 50%, providing a strong incentive for professionals to utilize these new, cost-free advanced resources.
