Era Raises $11M to Power the Future of AI Hardware

The startup Era has secured $11 million in total funding to develop a software platform designed to power the next generation of artificial intelligence hardware. By providing an intelligence layer that manages voice customization and AI orchestration, the company aims to move beyond traditional app-based models, allowing creators to build specialized devices ranging from smart jewelry to home speakers.

Scaling the AI Hardware Ecosystem

The company’s recent funding round includes $9 million in seed capital led by Abstract Ventures and BoxGroup, with contributions from Mozilla Ventures and Collaborative Fund. This follows an initial $2 million pre-seed round supported by Betaworks and Topology Ventures. The platform currently integrates over 130 large language models (LLMs) from more than 14 providers, giving hardware makers the flexibility to power various form factors.

According to CEO Liz Dorman, the goal is to democratize the creation of intelligent objects. “I think one of the incredible things that we can do with these AI models today is that you can replace that app layer,” Dorman explained. She emphasizes that the future of technology should not be dictated solely by companies in San Francisco, but rather by a broader community of makers.

Key Features of the Era Platform

• Dynamic Routing: The platform excels at routing tasks across multiple models and managing real-world constraints like connectivity, according to investor Casey Caruso of Topology Ventures.
• Multimodal Support: Designed to handle diverse inputs, the software allows for intelligent functions across glasses, bracelets, and other wearable tech.
• Privacy-First Design: As the startup scales, it intends to allow users to select their own memory and model providers, prioritizing user privacy in the AI gadget space.

A Collaborative Approach to Development

Earlier this April, Era hosted a showcase in New York where artists demonstrated experimental gadgets built with the company’s developer kit. These prototypes included:

• A souvenir device that provides facts and humor about France.
• A phone-like tool designed to track stocks and notify users if they can quit their job, dubbed the non-improvised retirement device.
• A gadget focused on monitoring air quality.

Founding Team and Vision

Era was founded last year by a team with deep experience in the AI and hardware sectors. CEO Liz Dorman previously worked at Humane and HP, while CTO Alex Ollman focused on agentic frameworks for enterprises at HP. Chief Product Officer Megan Gole brings experience from Sutter Hill Ventures, where she worked on the project involving Jony Ive and Sam Altman.

The company is backed by a notable list of angel investors, including Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake, iPhone keyboard creator Ken Kocienda, and former Rabbit CPO ShaoBo Z, among others. As the AI hardware market continues to evolve, Era intends to keep its platform accessible to the open-source and maker communities, betting that a “Cambrian explosion” of new hardware form factors is on the horizon.
