Fitbit Founders Launch Luffu AI to Simplify Family Care
James Park and Eric Friedman, the visionaries who built the Fitbit empire, are returning to the health technology sector with a new venture. Two years after departing from Google, the duo has announced the launch of Luffu, an artificial intelligence startup aimed at reducing the logistical and mental strain of managing family health.
The platform functions as an “intelligent family care system.” While the initial rollout centers on a mobile application, the founders have confirmed that the project will eventually expand into dedicated hardware devices. The timing of the launch aligns with a growing demographic shift; a recent report indicates that 63 million U.S. adults now serve as family caregivers, a figure that has surged 45% over the past decade.
Solving the Fragmented Caregiving Experience
Park noted that while the consumer health market is saturated with individual-focused tools, there has been a lack of solutions addressing the shared nature of health within a family unit. Currently, vital information is often scattered across paper records, digital portals, spreadsheets, and calendar apps.
Luffu aims to centralize this data. Users can input information through text, voice, or photographs, covering a wide range of needs:
- Health metrics and vital signs
- Medication schedules
- Dietary habits and nutrition
- Lab test results
- Doctor appointment summaries
The platform’s AI operates in the background to identify daily patterns and flag anomalies—such as irregular sleep or unusual vital signs—that might require attention.
The Motivation Behind the Tech
For Park, the inspiration was deeply personal. “I was caring for my parents from across the country, trying to piece together my mom’s health care across various portals and providers, with a language barrier that made it hard to get complete, timely context,” Park shared in a press release. He explained that he wanted a way to stay informed without becoming an intrusive presence in his mother’s life.
Eric Friedman emphasized the operational efficiency the tool provides. “We designed Luffu to capture the details as life happens, keep family members updated and surface what matters at the right time—so caregiving feels more coordinated and less chaotic,” Friedman stated.
As reported by Axios, the system allows for natural language queries. Users can ask the AI specific questions, such as whether a new meal plan is impacting a relative’s blood pressure or if a pet has received its scheduled medication. Those interested in testing the platform can currently join the waitlist for a limited public beta.
