Google Brings Gemini Canvas to AI Mode for All US Users

Google has officially expanded its Canvas feature within AI Mode to all users across the United States. Initially introduced as a Google Labs experiment last year, the tool is now integrated directly into the search experience for English-language queries.

The update allows users to leverage Gemini’s capabilities to draft documents, build custom tools, or organize complex research projects without leaving the search interface. According to a company blog post, the expansion aims to bring advanced project planning and content creation tools to a broader audience.

How the Canvas Feature Works

To access the tool, users simply select the Canvas option from the (+) menu while in AI Mode. Once activated, a side panel opens, allowing for several creative and technical tasks:

  • Project Organization: Users can compile information from the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph to build study guides or research reports.
  • Content Transformation: The feature can convert research into web pages, quizzes, or audio overviews—a capability that shares functional territory with Google’s NotebookLM.
  • Code and App Creation: By describing an idea, users can generate code for apps or games, test functionality, and refine the output through direct interaction with Gemini.
  • Writing Assistance: Canvas provides a dedicated space to iterate on creative writing drafts and receive feedback.

Market Context and Competition

The move highlights Google’s strategy to leverage the massive reach of its Search engine to integrate AI features directly into the daily habits of billions of users. By bringing Canvas to AI Mode, Google is lowering the barrier to entry for those who have not yet explored the dedicated Gemini interface.

Canvas faces direct competition from similar offerings by industry rivals. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT Canvas triggers automatically based on user queries, Google and Anthropic’s Claude generally require more explicit user interaction to initiate the workspace. Despite these differences in activation, the core value proposition remains consistent across platforms: providing an interactive workspace for writing, coding, and collaborative project development.

For power users, Canvas remains available within the primary Gemini interface, where Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers benefit from the Gemini 3 model and a 1 million-token context window for handling highly complex tasks.
