Google Launches AI Fake Call Detection for Android Users

Google is deploying a new security layer for its mobile ecosystem designed to neutralize the growing threat of AI-driven impersonation scams. Starting this month, the company is introducing fake call detection to Android devices running version 12 or higher, with an initial rollout prioritizing Pixel users before expanding globally.

The feature addresses a sophisticated evolution in cybercrime: attackers are increasingly bypassing traditional suspicion by spoofing caller IDs to look like trusted contacts, such as family members or employers, while using generative AI to mimic their voices. These scams often involve high-pressure tactics, such as requesting urgent financial assistance for a fabricated emergency.

How the Verification Works

The system operates automatically in the background through the Phone by Google app. It functions as a digital handshake between devices, utilizing Rich Communication Services (RCS) to verify the authenticity of a call.

• When an incoming call is received, the system checks for a confirmation signal.
• If the signal is missing, the device pings the caller’s phone to verify if a call is actually being placed.
• If the caller’s device denies initiating the call, a warning is displayed on the user’s screen, advising them to disconnect immediately.

Google detailed the technical process in a blog post, noting that the infrastructure is built on RCS, which could potentially allow other companies and applications to implement similar protective measures.

Broader Android Ecosystem Updates

Beyond security, Google announced several functional updates across its platform:

• Google Photos: A new “wardrobe” feature, arriving next week for Android 10+ users in the U.S., India, and Brazil, catalogs clothing from a user’s library for virtual outfit testing.
• Google Play Books: A “Catch me up” tool is now available for select English titles, providing story recaps and allowing users to ask questions about specific passages.
• Circle to Search: Enhanced to identify entire outfits in a single search, eliminating the need to look for individual items. This is now active on all Android 14+ devices that support the feature.
