Google Maps Adds AI Photo Captions and New Contributor Perks

Google is rolling out a series of updates to its Maps platform aimed at streamlining how users share local insights and media. The most significant addition is the integration of Gemini, which now automatically generates captions for photos and videos uploaded by users.

When a user selects media to share, Gemini analyzes the content to produce a descriptive caption. While the tool provides a starting point for posts, users retain full control to edit or delete the AI-generated text before publishing. This feature is currently available in English for iOS users in the U.S., with plans for a global rollout and Android support in the coming months.

Simplified Media Sharing

To help contributors identify which images are most relevant, Google Maps is introducing smarter media suggestions. Users who grant the app media access in their device settings will see photos and videos from their recent outings directly within the “Contribute” tab. These recommendations are currently live globally on both iOS and Android devices.

Google stated that these improvements are designed to maintain the freshness of location data, relying on a community of over 500 million contributors to keep Maps accurate.

Enhanced Recognition for Local Guides

Beyond content creation, Google is revamping the visibility of the Local Guides program. The app now displays total points earned directly in the “Contribute” tab, and user profile pages will prominently highlight their current Local Guide level.

The update also introduces changes to how contributors are recognized:

• Achievement Badges: Updated categories make it clearer if a user is an “expert fact-finder,” “master photographer,” or “rising novice.”
• Visual Profile Updates: High-level contributors will now be identifiable through new gold-colored profile accents.

These changes reflect Google’s focus on gamifying the contribution process, encouraging users to continue providing reviews, photos, and factual updates that help refine the platform’s local search capabilities.
