Google Play Store Adds AI Features and New ‘You’ Tab
Google is rolling out a significant overhaul to the Play Store, integrating generative AI and personalized navigation to transform how users discover and interact with mobile content. The update introduces a suite of tools designed to streamline the user experience for its base of over 4 billion people.
According to Aurash Mahbod, VP and General Manager of Google Play, the company’s objective is to evolve the store into a more cohesive destination. “Our ambition is to help all users engage with the apps and content that fuel their needs and interests,” Mahbod stated during a press briefing.
AI-Driven Discovery and Curated Content
A primary addition is “Guided Search,” which leverages AI to interpret user intent. Instead of relying on specific app titles, users can now input goals, such as “find a home,” to receive relevant recommendations for real estate applications.
The Apps tab is also evolving to include “curated spaces.” These sections organize content by seasonal themes or specific user interests. For example, U.S. users will see dedicated WNBA content, while Korean users receive a space focused on short-form video and serialized dramas—reflecting the high consumption of short-form media on mobile devices.
The ‘You’ Tab: Centralizing User Data
A new “You” tab has been introduced to act as a hub for account management. This section tracks:
- Active subscriptions
- Play Points and rewards
- Personalized recommendations
- Recent activity across media types
Gamers will also find their profile, achievements, and stats within this tab, with the added ability to customize their presence using GenAI-generated avatars.
Play Games Sidekick and Desktop Expansion
For mobile gaming, Google is introducing the “Play Games Sidekick,” an AI-powered overlay supported by Gemini. This tool provides real-time assistance, allowing players to get tips without exiting their games. Initial support includes titles like Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, FC Mobile, and Solo Leveling: Arise.
“Instead of having to leave the game to seek out tutorials or walkthroughs, we’re leveraging the latest Gemini audio-to-audio model to help understand your gaming context,” Mahbod explained.
Additionally, Google Play Games on PC has officially exited beta, bringing over 200,000 titles to Windows desktop environments.
