Google Search Adds Conversational AI Mode to Overviews

Google is evolving its search engine into a more interactive platform by allowing users to transition directly from AI Overviews into conversational sessions. This update enables a fluid back-and-forth dialogue for complex queries, moving beyond the static summaries previously displayed at the top of results pages.

Google now lets users jump from AI Overviews into AI Mode conversations

As part of this shift, the company is implementing Gemini 3 as the default model for AI Overviews on a global scale. According to Google, this transition aims to provide high-quality, intelligent responses directly within the search interface, ensuring that the technology can handle both simple facts and deep, multifaceted topics.

Improving Search Depth

The integration is designed to maintain context as users pivot from a quick information snapshot to a deeper investigation. Robby Stein, VP of Product for Google Search, noted that while some users seek rapid answers like weather updates or sports scores, others require a more robust, conversational experience for complex tasks.

Key aspects of this update include:

  • Seamless Flow: Users can now initiate follow-up questions immediately after viewing an AI Overview.
  • Gemini 3 Integration: The latest model serves as the backbone for AI-generated search responses worldwide.
  • Context Preservation: The system remembers the initial search intent, allowing for a natural, multi-turn conversation.

Internal testing conducted by the company suggests that this conversational flow significantly improves user satisfaction, as it allows for exploration without the need to start new searches for related queries.

Broadening the AI Ecosystem

These changes are part of a larger strategy to integrate “Personal Intelligence” across Google products. Recently, the company introduced features allowing AI Mode to access data from Gmail and Google Photos to offer more personalized results. Furthermore, AI Overviews have been extended to Gmail, enabling users to query their inboxes using natural language rather than relying on traditional keyword-based searches.

These updates follow the recent debut of Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app, which connects various parts of the Google ecosystem, including YouTube history, to tailor AI responses to the individual user.
