Google Translate Adds AI-Powered Pronunciation Practice

Google Translate is marking its 20th anniversary by introducing a significant update designed to help users master the nuances of foreign languages. The platform has officially launched a new pronunciation practice tool that provides immediate, AI-driven feedback on how users speak translated words and phrases.

How the Pronunciation Tool Works

The feature functions as an interactive module accessible directly within the translation interface. After entering text, users can navigate to the “Practice” menu and select the “Pronounce” button. This action displays phonetic guides and prompts the user to speak the text aloud.

Once the user speaks, the app evaluates the input and offers specific guidance, such as identifying unclear sounds. Users also have the option to listen to the app’s own synthesized pronunciation to compare their performance. The system mirrors the interactive approach popularized by language-learning platforms like Duolingo, focusing on active speaking rather than passive reading.

Availability and Rollout

The update is currently being deployed in the United States and India. At this initial stage, the pronunciation feedback tool supports three languages:

• Hindi

Expanding Translation Capabilities

This launch follows a period of rapid development for Google’s translation suite. Just last month, the company expanded its live headphone translation feature to iOS users. That update also increased the geographical reach of the tool for Android devices, bringing real-time translation support to users in Germany, Spain, France, Nigeria, Italy, the United Kingdom, Japan, Bangladesh, and Thailand.
